PERFORMS NORTH MUMBAI’S FIRST TAVI WITH NEXT GEN DRY TISSUE VALVE
Every first holds a special meaning, it marks the start of something significant, a new chapter that brings with it hope, progress, and the promise of better care. For Indigo Hospital Super Speciality Healthcare, that special moment arrived with the successful completion of its first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) using the Sapien 3 Ultra Resilia valve, the world’s first and only dry tissue valve, recognized globally for its unmatched durability and superior clinical outcomes.
This groundbreaking Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure was performed under the expert leadership of Dr. Ashish Agrawal, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, whose vast experience and precision ensured an excellent clinical outcome.
A Complex Case, A Compassionate Approach
The patient, a 60-year-old male, had been suffering from severe aortic stenosis, a condition in which the heart’s aortic valve becomes narrowed, obstructing blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. His left ventricle (LV), the chamber responsible for pumping blood, was severely compromised, leading to significant breathlessness, pedal edema, and difficulty sleeping.

The left ventricle, which pumps blood to the entire body, was extremely weak,” explained Dr. Agrawal. “Such patients were traditionally treated with open-heart surgery to replace the diseased valve. However, because of the patient’s poor heart function, surgery was not a safe option.”
The Innovation of TAVI
Thanks to modern medical innovation, the TAVI procedure offers a less invasive alternative to open-heart surgery. Instead of opening the chest, the new valve is implanted via a small puncture in the femoral artery in the leg.
“In this procedure, we don’t remove the old, calcified valve,” Dr. Agrawal elaborated. “The new valve, a bioprosthetic valve, is expanded inside the old one, pushing it aside and restoring blood flow.”
The Sapien 3 Ultra Resilia valve represents a major leap forward in valve technology. Earlier bioprosthetic valves, while effective, had limited longevity and were typically used in elderly or high-risk patients. The Resilia valve, on the other hand, uses dry tissue technology that provides over 25 years of proven durability in bench testing, offering a longer, healthier life to patients.
Precision, Compassion, and Success
In this case, the patient’s Type 1 bicuspid anatomy (RCC and NCC fused) and severe LV dysfunction made the procedure especially complex. However, under Dr. Agrawal’s guidance, the team successfully implanted a 29 mm Sapien 3 Ultra Resilia valve, resulting in excellent post-procedural recovery.
“The patient’s condition improved remarkably soon after the intervention,” said Dr. Agrawal. “He could breathe comfortably and sleep well for the first time in weeks. Seeing that transformation is the most fulfilling part of our work.”
Dr Agrawal also added, “We are proud to state that It is the first TAVI with this dry tissue valve in north eastern Mumbai and Thane region.”,

A Festival of Hope
The timing of the procedure added even deeper significance to the moment. As the nation celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, Indigo Hospital celebrated its own victory of light over darkness, restoring health, hope, and happiness to a family in need.“The joy and gratitude from our patient’s family truly illuminated our Diwali,” said the hospital team in a statement. “Every successful outcome is a celebration of life itself.”
A Commitment to Excellence
This first implantation marks a defining moment for Indigo Hospital Super Speciality Healthcare, reinforcing its reputation for medical innovation, patient-centric care, and clinical excellence.
Although the hospital has performed several TAVI procedures at its center, this case holds special significance as it marks the first implantation of the SAPIEN 3 Ultra Resilia valve featuring advanced dry tissue technology, which has only recently been introduced in India.
“At Indigo, we believe in combining advanced technology with compassionate care,” said the hospital in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to our patients for the trust they place in us, and we remain committed to delivering the best possible outcomes.”
The success of this landmark procedure not only highlights Indigo Hospital’s growing expertise in structural heart interventions but also symbolizes a new era of possibilities for patients with complex cardiac conditions.
